Some recent looks #4

recent looks header

I only have two looks for you today, and they’re both a little (or a lot) out there. But that’s probably a good thing, considering I often get stuck in a makeup rut and wear variations of the same thing every day!

St. Patrick’s Day

st paddys day

Although I am of vaguely Irish heritage somewhere down the line, I don’t particularly care for or about St. Patrick’s Day. But I’ve had this half dry green Colour Tattoo for years now, so I busted it out to give it the barest minimum of love before chucking it. (I really had to scrape it to get any colour payoff; it had completely come away from the edges of the pot.) I went for warm neutrals on the cheeks and lips to complement the eyes, which I think worked well.

I don’t often wear colours on my eyes, but this was a fairly wearable look. I mean, I didn’t feel very weird wearing it to class. I think it’s partially my hooded eyelids – you never get a concentrated shot of colour unless I look down or close my eyes. And, I mean, if there’s any day for un-self-consciously wearing green eyeshadow, it’s March 17.

Life On Mars?

life on mars

The day after St. Patrick’s Day was Bowie Night! “Life On Mars?” is 100%, no doubt one of my favourite songs of all time, so when my roommate, our friends, and I decided to go, recreating the look from the video was a no-brainer. It did require buying a new eyeshadow which I will probably never use again, but Bowie is worth it.

It was slightly difficult to figure out the makeup: the video on YouTube is quite washed out, making it look like Bowie is wearing white foundation – but some of the images on Google show him with his regular (fair) skintone. In the video, the lips look like more of a peachy coral, but in images, they look bright pink. I mainly deferred to the pictures, because I like the bright colours and because, well, I don’t have white foundation.

I mainly went off these two gifs.

As you can see, my attempts to conceal my brows were not successful. I used a really high coverage concealer and followed all the steps to the T, so I’m not sure what went wrong. My brows are pretty coarse, so maybe that’s it? I think it was a textural issue rather than a colour issue, because I’ve seen people with black brows do it successfully. Or maybe I truly have no idea what I’m doing. That’s possible, too. (My Uber driver at the end of the night took one look at me and said, “What happened to your eyebrows?”, which was #rude. But, I mean, fine, they looked bad. I admit it. Those close-ups are ROUGH.)

I also made a more serious attempt at faking a mullet after I took the makeup pictures:

mullet

It’s certainly not the Hunky Dory-era mullet… those feathered bangs, though.

My only regret is that I didn’t have a powder blue suit.

(Is it just me, or is hot pink blush on the sides of the nose kind of a good look?)

Some recent looks #3

Posted on November 18, 2015 under FOTD

It’s been awhile since I last posted makeup pictures, and I have a bit of a backlog. Let’s cut the preamble and jump right into it. As always, shades I used in palettes are marked with a very crude pink star.

All Burgundy All The Time

fotd-burgundy

I love eyeshadows that look good on their own, that you can just slap on and blend out at the edges and call it a day. I mean, crafting a complex eye look is fun and all, but I don’t always have time for that – yet I don’t want to sacrifice looking like I’m an eyeshadow master. I also love magenta/burgundy/berry/plum, and since it’s fall it just makes sense to put a bunch of stuff in that shade range on my face. I love how this monochrome look turned out!

One-Shadow Olive

Remember how I said I’m into one-shadow looks? Yeah. Here’s another one. This was also my attempt to get more into my BalmJovi palette, which has some gorgeous shades shades that were just made for fall. Since the eyes on this one were pretty dark, I went for a light lipstick to balance it all out.

Celebratory Gold Glitter

fotd-celebration

So, you may have heard that Canada has a new Prime Minister. Like most Canadians in my demographic (students living in a big city), I was vehemently opposed to Stephen Harper, who was PM for almost ten years. This was my first federal election, and while my local candidate did not win (:() and while I’m not a huge Liberal supporter, I’m excited just to be done with Harper! My American roommate was into the election too, and we watched the entire thing together.

The next day I decided to go all out with the gold and glitter to celebrate the fact that Canada can put Harper behind us. I also went with a warm red lipstick and peach blush, because they were pretty together and made me happy.

Grad Photos

fotd-grad-pics

This is actually a really similar look to my Justin Trudeau-is-PM look, but it’s a classic for a reason! I had my grad photos taken a few weeks ago and obviously I went all out. I decided to do my makeup as close to quintessential Clem as possible. (This is harder than it sounds considering I switch it up all the time!) I like to experiment with eyeshadow, but I would say I’m most comfortable with a light, slightly shimmery, neutral look – so I went with that. Most people said I should go for a natural lipstick colour, but I went with my gut and chose something more me – naturally, Charlotte Tilbury Red Carpet Red. I’m glad about it, because with how fair I am and how washed out the lighting made me I think the red helped make me look alive:

Some recent looks #2

Posted on June 04, 2015 under FOTD

I can never seem to get it together enough to do a dedicated, single-look FOTD post; rather, I photograph looks that I like and then compile them into one post when there’s enough to warrant such a thing. Here are three recent looks I did that I particularly liked. All of these have one thing in common: the (relatively) low-key lip colours. I’ve been into neutral lips lately – how very unlike me!

Peach

Peach FOTD using Lancôme and Milani

I wanted to try a peachy look mainly because peach is a colour that I’m afraid of. I also wanted it to be fresh, simple, and glowy, which meant that I skipped eyeliner and went light on the mascara. I decided to try out this Lancôme lipstick that Aisling gave me back in November; she thought I would dislike it because I steer away from peaches, and I let it sit there, taunting me, for half a year. Finally, I tried it out and – shocker! – found I liked it. I got compliments on it all day at work, too!

(I also finally tried an orange-red lipstick and liked it. Everything I thought I knew is a lie.)

Products used to create a peachy look: Lancôme and Milani

Foundation: Revlon ColorStay for Dry Skin in 110 Ivory
Concealer: MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer in NC15 on blemishes; L’Oréal La Touche Magique Highlighting Concealer under the eyes
Powder: Rimmel Stay Matte
Blush: Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso topped with ELF Baked Blush in Peachy Cheeky
Contour: Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow
Brows: Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough As Taupe
Eye primer: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base
Eyeshadow: Lancôme Kitten Heel over the eyelid; Lancôme Platform in the crease
Mascara: Maybelline Illegal Length
Lipstick: Lancôme Rouge In Love lipstick in Corail In Love topped with Lancôme Fever Gloss in 100 Degrees

(Apparently I was loving Lancôme here.)

Taupe

Taupe FOTD, featuring Wet N Wild and Stila.

This look was a bit of an experiment: I wanted to pair Stila Patina, a “dusty rose” (as per Stila) with slight grey undertones, with one of my favourite taupe-y eyeshadows. That was a lot of neutral for me, so I used an indigo eyeshadow as liner, though if I did it again I’d probably use a product like Lise Watier Métamorfix to get more colour out of it!

Products for a taupe-y FOTD: Stila, Wet N Wild, Lancôme, The Body Shop.

(So, I love that gorgeous purple-y taupe Wet N Wild eyeshadow shade, but I’ve never touched the other two colours in the trio. Debating depotting.)

Foundation: Revlon ColorStay for Dry Skin in 110 Ivory
Concealer: MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer in NC15 on blemishes; L’Oréal La Touche Magique Highlighting Concealer under the eyes
Blush: Benefit Hervana
Contour: Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow
Brows: Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough As Taupe
Eye primer: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base
Eyeshadow: From Wet N Wild Silent Treatment Trio: “Eyelid” all over the lid. The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in the crease
“Eyeliner”: Lancôme Color Design eyeshadow in Infinitely Indigo
Mascara: Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant
Lipstick: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina

Smoky

Smoky eye using Stila and Urban Decay

One of the nice things about working in cosmetics is that a smoky eye is not too much for work. Generally I don’t go too heavy on the eye makeup, since I prefer to play up my lips, but once in awhile I go for something more dramatic! The other day I decided to go for a smoky eye, and went with the conventional wisdom that says “eyes or lips, not both”. I don’t have very many neutral lip colours relative to the bold ones, but this one in the Rimmel Kate Moss line is one of my most-used lip products, period.

Products used to create a smoky eye.

Foundation: Revlon ColorStay for Dry Skin in 110 Ivory
Concealer: MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer in NC15 on blemishes; L’Oréal La Touche Magique Highlighting Concealer under the eyes
Blush: Lancôme Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourôse
Contour: Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Hollow
Brows: Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough As Taupe
Eye primer: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base
Eyeshadow: From Stila All Day 3D Wet-to-Set Eyeshadow Trio in Thunder Cloud: middle shade all over the eyelid, lightest shade as inner-corner highlight. From Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette: Blackheart on the outer corner, lightly in the crease, and along the lower lashline. The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in the crease.
Eyeliner: Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner on the upper lashline; Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Noir on the waterline
Mascara: Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant
Lipstick: Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss #17 over Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in 63 Eastend Snob

This look seems to be all about the Rimmel, balancing out my Lancôme love.

And there we go: some things I’ve put on my face recently! I’m sure there will be some more exciting looks coming at you in the future, since my job allows me quite a bit of freedom in terms of how I wear my makeup.
