A makeup declutter + 2016 makeup inventory

Posted on December 15, 2016 under Declutter

It’s time for my second annual makeup inventory! (Last year’s is here.) But first, a look at some items which I’ve purged from my collection since my last declutter

I’ve become very picky with liquid lipstick formulas as of late, and I only have three formulas currently in my collection. I’m saying goodbye to NYX Liquid Suede in Sway because it’s just too cool and pulls all of the colour out of my face. I also wasn’t impressed with the formula, as it remains tacky to the touch. L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Last Lip Color in Violet Parfait survived a previous round of decluttering; I like the colour a lot and when applied correctly it’s extremely long-wearing. But I find that it’s not layerable at all, and crumbles off in a hideous mess if built up. Out it goes!

I’ve been really into the idea of “functional dupes” as discussed by Monika of Rocaille Writes, and a lot of my recent lip product decluttering has been with this in mind. I’m purging a GWP Lancôme Rouge in Love Lipstick in Corail in Love because now that I have NARS Brigitte it’s realistically the only peach shade I’ll be reaching for.

Speaking of Lancôme, I’m getting rid of another GWP, the Color Design Lipstick in Pale Lip, as well as the Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss lipstick in 045. I did genuinely like both of these products on myself, but I find that if I want a lighter nude shade (which is relatively rare anyway), Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss 17 is slightly more flattering than either of these. Yes, I’m getting rid of a $40 lipstick in favour of an $8 one, an interesting reversal of my usual habits. I just found Pale Lip slightly too light to be used without a darker liner underneath, whereas Rimmel Kate 17 is good to go straight out of the bullet.

Two more Rimmel Kate shades that must go: 09, which, though tonally different from NARS Audrey, I won’t reach for in favour of it when I want a deep red, and 105, which is rather old and which I find less flattering on me than Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

(By the way, I will not buy a full size of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang when I run out because I don’t think the formula is worth $38 CAD and because I don’t want to give my money to Marc Jacobs.)

After lots of hemming and hawing, I decided to get rid of my Revlon Lip Butter in Raspberry Pie. This is one of my absolute favourite lipstick colours and I have nothing quite like it in my collection. However, I haven’t actually worn this product in literal years, because I just don’t like the slippery formula of the Lip Butters – especially not when it comes to a pigmented, rich shade like this. I’m sorry to be saying goodbye to this one, but I’m sure I can dupe the colour in a formula that I like better, and it’s the oldest lipstick in my collection – I bought it in October 2012. Time to let it go!

It didn’t make it into these pictures, but I’m also getting rid of a mini tube of the OCC Lip Tar in Black Dahlia. It’s a gorgeous colour, but I’m just over the Lip Tars. I might get on better with the new packaging that comes with a wand, but I just cannot be bothered to put Black Dahlia on with a lip brush.

Two of my Revlon lip products melted in the sun due to my negligence: ColorBurst Balm Stain in Lovesick and Matte Balm in Sultry. I did have a backup of Lovesick, so crisis was averted there. I did not have a backup of Sultry, but ultimately decided not to replace it even though it’s one of my favourite lipstick colours. It’s just too similar to Maybelline Creamy Matte in Touch of Spice, and I’ve been wearing Touch of Spice more lately anyway.

Finally, I’m getting rid of the ELF Lip Lock Pencil because I’ve had it forever and it’s quite dry as clear lip liners go.

NYX Ultra HD Blush in Taupe was too dark and pigmented to work as a contour on my skintone. I gave it a fair shot, but I bet one of my less fair friends will love it more than I ever will! I have no issues with the formula of this product; the shade was simply wrong for me.

I have two Lancôme GWP blushes here. The first is in Sheer Amourôse, which was actually a favourite of mine for quite some time. It’s a very neutral, brownish-pink colour that goes with basically any look. As I added to my blush collection, I stopped reaching for it. My go-to neutral blush shades are Benefit Hervana and Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Mood Exposure, and the two of them have essentially rendered Sheer Amourôse redundant. A family friend who works for Lancôme often brings me goodies, which is where I got the other shade, Blushing Nude, from. It’s a very nice natural colour which swatches nicely, but I just don’t see it having a place in my collection so I’ve decided to toss it into my “to give away” bag without even using it. (The samples of the Hypnôse mascara she gave me will be used, however!)

I’ve had Benefit Benetint in my collection forever and used it a fair amount, but I just don’t go for cream and liquid blushes nowadays. However, it’s a lovely product and my mom uses cream and liquid blushes quite often, so it’s found a better home with her.

I’m getting rid of my limited edition Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Sunwashed Sky. I used to have a massive Colour Tattoo collection, but I simply don’t use them as often anymore for whatever reason and as such I’ve purged that collection considerably. Sunwashed Sky is a beautiful colour, but I prefer the other summer 2014 LE shade, Shimmering Sea, which I’ve kept (for now).

I got this Stila Countless Color Pigment in Tie Dye on clearance at Winners, and I wore it a lot when I was 19 and a lot cooler than I am now. (When I was 19 I also dyed my own hair and it became a patchy, hideous mess and I kept it like that for like 6 weeks, so, you know.)

Another Stila product (and Winners find): the Smudge Crayon in Umber. I really do like this rich chocolate brown shade, but it’s getting pretty dry – and, like I said, I no longer use cream shadows particularly often.

Though I do think the Hard Candy 1000 Lashed Fiberized Primer works decently as a lash primer at a very good price, realistically lash primer is just not something I’m ever going to add to my routine, so out it goes.

I made an ELF order this summer and they threw in a free glitter eyeliner which I’m pretty sure has been discontinued. This is another one of those products that I’m just not going to use – the duochrome glitter is really pretty, but I rarely use glitter liners and probably have too many hanging around in my collection without adding another one in.

For those keeping count, that makes for a total of 21 products decluttered this round.

My makeup inventory is under the cut, with my counts for this year and in parentheses last year’s totals.

Makeup inventory 2015 + another round of decluttering

Posted on November 22, 2015 under Declutter

As many of you know, I’ve been on a decluttering kick over the past year and a half. It’s been kicked back into high gear again due to recent developments. I’m really trying to cut my possessions down into a manageable amount that can, in theory, be easily transported if I were to, say, move halfway across the world again. (NOTHING OFFICIAL!!!!! But it’s in the works…)

So, here’s my last round of decluttering for 2015, as well as a makeup inventory for the year.

Face products

Bourjois Little Pot Blush in Rose Amber is a beautiful colour and comes in adorable limited edition packaging from 2013, but it’s developed a hard layer that makes it impossible to get to the colour. I could scrape it off, but frankly that’s too much work for me when I have other blushes I can be using without hassle! It makes me sad to get rid of it because I specifically asked Aisling to send it to me for Christmas two years ago when she was first in the UK and I was excited at the prospect of trying some brands I can’t get here – but the fact is that it’s become too difficult to use.

Lip products

I just don’t like glosses, and although the L’Oreal Extraordinnaire glosses in Plum Adagio and Molto Mauve are lovely, I never use them. I do love and use my Lancôme Fever Gloss in 100 Degrees, it’s started to smell really off. :(

Getting rid of two liquid lipsticks here: Joe Fresh Long Wear Liquid Lipstick in Rouge because I cannot stand warm reds on myself, and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery because it bleeds out of my lip lines something fierce. I’m pretty bummed about that one since it was pricey and I like the three other colours I have in the Stay All Day range, but I suppose these things happen.

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Darling (discontinued) is very pale and washes me out. NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rigukien is a beautiful colour, but I have similar colours and the staying power is abysmal. Got CoverGirl Outlast lipstick in Red Rogue from work, but I’m not in the market for any new reds, so I’m setting it free. (It hasn’t been worn, so one of my friends can give it the love I cannot.) No7 Precision Lips Pencil in Fire is a bit dry and I like my Rimmel Red Diva lip liner better.

Eye products

Three single eyeshadows that are lovely but that I never reach for: L’Oreal Color Infallible Eyeshadow in Flashback Silver, Annabelle eyeshadow in Violish, Maybelline Color Tattoo in Pomegranate Punk. I’m kind of bummed about these because they’re all gorgeous colours and nice formulas, but I can’t have stuff I don’t use lying around! Getting rid of the Eyelure lash glue (not pictured – it escaped from me in the bottom of my declutter bag!) because I think it sucks. The Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liner in Blackest Black never worked out for me; it transferred like crazy!

In terms of pencil liners, I can’t remember the last time I used either Annabelle Metallic Kohl Eyliner in Curacao or Sephora Flashy Liner in Flashy Brown. Out they go.

Eyeshadow sticks: the Stila Smudge Crayons in Antique and Kitten are lovely colours and I used to get a lot of use out of them, but they’ve dried out quite a bit and I have a newer Lise Watier shadow stick in a similar colour. I’ve never used the Kiko Eyetech Look Eyeshadow in 114 and probably never will.

I never reach for the Too Faced Matte Eye palette, and I have too many other shadows to keep something that gets no use.

Up until now my discerning eye has not passed over my brushes when decluttering, but I’m getting rid of four. From Real Techniques, the Brow Brush (way too thick for brows or eyeliner; I never touch it) and the Foundation Brush (weird shape that doesn’t work with any product I use). From ELF, the Powder Brush (has literally been gathering dust for years), and the Mini Blending Brush (not a blending brush at all, WTF ELF; never use it).

Miscellaneous products

I received LUSH Comforter Hand and Body Lotion at a LUSH event, which was very nice! Sadly, I can’t stand the scent – and I have body moisturizers that I love and that smell nice to me. I’m sure one of my friends will love it, though.

Makeup inventory under the cut, for those interested.
